Join EcoSAGE – another post-doc opportunity

We have a new opportunity for you to join the EcoSAGE Lab as a post-doctoral researcher on the NERC Pushing the Frontiers project “Predicting the Impacts of Global Environmental Change on Ecological Networks”. This is a £1M NERC project led by Dr Eoin O’Gorman at Essex and in collaboration with Dr Athen Ma, Prof Vito Latora, and Dr Pavel Kratina at Queen Mary University of London. You would be under the direct supervision of Dr Ma and based at QMUL, but interact closely with Dr O’Gorman, another postdoc on the project under his direct supervision, and the rest of the EcoSAGE team at the University of Essex. The deadline for applying is 26th February 2024, with interviews to be held around the end of March, and a start date as soon as possible thereafter.

The overarching goal of the project is to advance our understanding of how climate change disrupts the sub-structural organisation and dynamics of ecosystems, enabling us to build a novel model that can predict future ecosystem-level responses to climate change. The successful postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for exploring the general properties of sub-structures from a dataset of >600 food webs and identifying redundancy in sub-structures in response to climatic stressors. They will also be responsible for developing a dynamical model simulating biodiversity loss and network rewiring in response to realistic climate change scenarios. The successful candidate should be willing to collaborate with a postdoctoral researcher focused on empirical data collation and experimental ecology, who will also be working on the project and based at the University of Essex.

Applicants must have a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field. Expertise in network science and complex systems, as well as experience of profiling structures in large-scales systems is essential for this role. Good knowledge of dynamics modelling in complex systems and general interest in ecology is desirable.
